The Secretary of State and the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation (hereinafter referred to as "the Minister") acting jointly in exercise of their powers under sections 48 and 59 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930(a), as read with the Transfer of Functions (Roads, Bridges and Ferries) Order, 1955(b),

section 1 of the Road Traffic Act, 1934(a), sections 4 and 35 of the Road Traffic Act, 1956(b), and of all other powers them enabling in that behalf hereby make the following Regulations:—

Commencement and Citation

1. These Regulations shall come into operation on the first day of March, 1957, and may be cited as the Traffic Signs (30 m.p.h. Speed Limit) Regulations, 1957.

Revocation

2. The Traffic Signs (Speed Limit) Regulations, 1941(c), are hereby revoked, without prejudice, however, to the validity of anything done thereunder or to any liability incurred in respect of any act or omission before the coming into operation of these Regulations.

Interpretation

3.—(1) Any reference in these Regulations to any enactment shall be construed as a reference to that enactment as amended by any subsequent enactment.

(2) The Interpretation Act, 1889(d), shall apply to the interpretation of these Regulations as it applies to the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.

4. The traffic signs which a local authority shall cause to be erected in accordance with the provisions of sub-section (7) of section 1 of the Road Traffic Act, 1934, and directions given by the Secretary of State or the Minister, as the case may be, under that section shall be as follows:—

(a) a traffic sign for conveying information that a length of road is deemed to be a road in a built-up area and that accordingly drivers of motor vehicles are subject to a speed limit of thirty miles per hour on that length of road;

(b) a traffic sign for conveying information as to the point at which a length of road ceases to be a road which is deemed to be a road in a built-up area; and

(c) a traffic sign for conveying information that a length of road is not deemed to be a road in a built-up area.
