nation
of
women gets
short
shrift.
Akua Kuenyehia,
for
example,
starts
her
article
on
African
women
by
suggesting
that
human rights
are
irrel-
evant
to
them
in
their
situation
of
poverty,
but
proceeds
to
argue
against
herself
by
stating
that
women
need
rights
in
order
to
survive
economically.
This
article,
like
many
others,
shows
little
awareness
of
the
non-legal
literature
on
such
matters
as
the
rights
vs
development
debate.
The
discussion
of
women's
rights
as
human
rights
is
a
relatively
new
field.
As
recently
as
1988,
I
attended
a
conference
on
cultural
rights
in
which
not
one
word
was
spoken (except
by
me)
about
how
indigenous cultural
practices
oppress
women.
At
that
time,
many
human
rights
scholars
still
thought
it
improper
to
criticize
indigenous
cultures.
Such
complete
evasion
would
not
occur
now.
The
scholars
in
this
volume
uniformly
reject
any
contention
that
women's
rights
should
be
subordinated
to
local
customs
or
religions.
This
book
is
a
must for
international
lawyers
and
all
scholars
inter-
ested
in
international
human
rights. It
might
also
be
useful
for teaching
outside
the
field
of
law:
for
example,
in
a
senior
or
graduate
political
science
seminar on
women's rights.
