Introduction
Uppsala, the city of Linnaeus, is the
fourth largest city and lies in the heart of
Sweden. The year 2007 is the 300th
anniversary of Carl Linnaeus, the
famous scientist, who developed a
classification system in natural science
and studied medicine at Uppsala. The
ETD 2007 delegates had the opportunity
to enjoy the Linnaean atmosphere, visit
the botanical garden which is named
‘‘Linnaeus Garden and Linnaeus
Information Centre’’ to know more
about the scientist and his work.
Under the general theme ‘‘Added
values to e-theses’’, ETD 2007 was
organised around two main sub themes:
‘‘Integrating ETDs with institutional
processes and practices’’ and ‘‘Value
added services’’. The focus was on:
.integrating e-theses into local ser-
vices (student portals, educational
portals and platforms, research
databases, electronic prepublication
process);
.integrating e-theses into the re-
search process (i.e. linking with
research projects etc.);
.integrating e-theses in national and
international services (syndication,
OAI-PMH, discovery services, syn-
tactic and semantic interoperability);
.local practices regarding e-theses;
.linking ETDs with related material
such as data sets, statistics, multi-
media;
.long-term preservation;
.business models and sustainability;
.legal issues (copyright, liability,
plagiarism).
Based on the discussion and paper
presentations during conference and
personal interaction the author had with
the participants in ETD 2006, this report
is a useful summary of the conference
which can be a topic of interest to all the
stakeholders of ETDs including
managers of the information systems,
educators, librarians, Chief Knowledge
Officers researchers, students and
faculty members. Some practical
experiences, challenges and new ideas
that have not made the traditional
literature are introduced in this
discussion forum. Many case studies
and presentations were delivered
especially on value-added services to
e-theses to bring more visibility and
accessibility to these products. Nearly
150 delegates represented institutions in
38 countries on six continents, attended
four days of activities that included two
plenary sessions, two key note addresses
(Figure 1), 36 papers and interactive
poster session with nine posters. The
conference highlighted scholarly
communication among attendees by
offering many opportunities for
delegates to meet and socialize in
informal settings, including an elegant
opening reception, walking tour
including visits to the Cathedral and
museum Gustavianum, networking
lunch at restaurant Hyllan and dinner
hosted at the O
¨stgo¨ta Student Nation in
central Uppsala.
Symposium venue
The ETD 2007 symposium venue
was Uppsala University, the oldest
university in the Nordic countries,
founded in 1477 and a comprehensive
international research university
dedicated to advancing science,
scholarship and higher education. The
University Main Building is situated in
the center of the town, close to the
cathedral. It is magnificent and spacious
foyer with its light cupolas and the
grand auditorium, gives a good idea of
the best of 19th-century Swedish
architecture.
