“Appily ever after”: how to create your own
library mobile app through easy to use, low
cost technology
Susan Boller
Overview
How to encourage more young
readers and provide access to library
resources 24/7? It is a challenge that
has been tackled brilliantly by Susan
Boller and Marie-Pierre Preece,
librarians at Les Marronniers Primary
School at the International School of
Geneva, Switzerland. Their achievement,
“Marronniers Library” mobile app,
received wide recognition when they
were awarded the 2016 ALA Presidential
Citation for Innovative International
Library Projects.
The app was showcased in a poster
session at the ALA Annual Conference
in Chicago in June 2017 as a pilot for
other libraries to raise awareness of
what can be effectively achieved by
libraries on their own by smart use of
technology (Plate 1). The poster session
demonstrated that the library staff can
develop their own mobile app without
having significant technology
experience by using existing easily
accessible low-cost programs.
