Abstract
Purpose Owing to high competition in education sector, quality in education has become utmost
important criteriato deliver better educationservice. For this purpose, it is required to monitor the quality of
education. This paper aims to prioritize National Board of Accreditation (NBA) quality parameters in
engineeringeducation as per students needs using qualityfunction deployment (QFD).
Design/methodology/approach This study is conducted among studentsof an institute of National
importance in three stages. Stage 1 involves conducting interview with 23 students to nd the students
requirement from an institute.Further Stage 2 involves importance rating collection throughquestionnaire
survey method. In this stage, 228 studentshave given a rating of each students requirement. Finally, Stage3
involves establishing correlation between students requirementand NBA quality parameters that has been
done by 20 academicexperts and nally making a QFD matrix for ranking ofeach NBA quality parameter.
Findings The result of the study rst indicates that among all studentsrequirements, job-oriented
requirement is the most important need, and ergonomics-based requirement is the least important need of
students. Further, to fullltheir needs, an institute has to focus on each NBA quality parameter. But among
all NBA quality parameters, students performance is highly desirablequality parameter.
Practical implications This study will help top management of engineering institutions in making
better policies andstrategies for preparing their quality framework. Thesestrategies will indirectly fulll the
customerneeds that help in attracting more number ofstudents toward those institutes.
Originality/value In India, NBA is one of the leading bodiesthat monitor the quality of education. On
the other hand, the institutionhas to satisfy the need of customer of education sector; therefore, prioritization
of NBA quality parameter as per students need is one of the important needs that will help engineering
institution to focus on a certain parameter to get a good quality certicate and also attract a number of
meritoriousstudents.

1. Introduction
Engineering courses in India are the preferred choice for students who have scored high at
the 10 þ2 level. The competition for the top institutions is intense with students spending
time and money on coaching classes to get the added edge in the competitiveentrance tests.
This increasing demandfor engineering has resulted in a mushrooming of a largenumber of
engineering colleges in the country. As per the record of AICTE (All India Council of
Technical Education), therewere a total of 3,291 approved engineering colleges in India, out
of which 2,935 were unaided private, 212 were government, 54 were government aided, 49
were university managed government, 18 were university managed private, 5 were central
