The Secretary of State, in exercise of his powers under section 1(1) and 1(3) to (5) of the Industrial Development Act 1982(a) hereby makes the following Order:—

Citation and commencement

1. This Order may be cited as the Assisted Areas Order 1984 and shall come into operation on 29th November 1984 ("the appointed day").

Interpretation

2. In this Order, "the 1982 Act" means the Industrial Development Act 1982 as amended by the Co-operative Development Agency and Industrial Development Act 1984, and "the 1979 Order" means the Assisted Areas Order 1979(b).

Revocation and savings

3. Subject to Article 4 below, the 1979 Order is hereby revoked.

4. Articles 5, 5A, 5B, 5C and 5D of the 1979 Order as in force immediately prior to the appointed day shall continue to have effect in relation to areas specified or designated by the 1979 Order as so in force in respect of the periods stated in Articles 4(1) and (2) thereof (in the case of areas referred to in those Articles) or commencing on 1st August 1982 and ending with the appointed day (in the case of areas referred to in Article 4(3) thereof).

Designations

5. In this Order the designation of an area as a development area or intermediate area is for the purposes of section 1 of the 1982 Act and section 1 of the Derelict Land Act 1982(c).

(a) 1982 c.52; a new section 1(4) was inserted by section 4 of the Co-operative Development Agency and Industrial Development Act 1984 (c.57).

(b) S.I. 1979/837, as amended by S.I. 1979/1642, 1980/1110 and 1982/934.

(c) 1982 c.42.

6. On and after the appointed day—

(a) the areas described in Schedule 1 hereto shall be development areas; and

(b) the areas described in Schedule 2 hereto shall be intermediate areas.

7.—(1) In Schedules 1 and 2 hereto, any reference to a travel to work area shall be a reference to that area as it existed on 27th September 1984.

(2) In Schedule 2 hereto—

(a) any reference to a ward shall be a reference to that ward as it existed on 5th April 1981, save that in the case of wards within the City of Salford any reference to such a ward shall be a reference to that ward as it existed on 6th May 1982; and

(b) the reference to the Borough of Tameside shall be a reference to that Borough as it existed on 5th April 1981.
