A brief history of Adeyemi College
Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo was
established in 1964 as a Teachers’ College for
the production of the Nigeria Certificate in
Education (NCE) graduates. The college was
merged with the then University of Ife (now
Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1972.
The college started first degree awarding
programmes in some disciplines during the
1982/83 session (Adeyemi College of Educa-
tion, 1994). The college became autonomous
on 19 January 1990 and it is now under the
umbrella of the National Commission for
Colleges of Education (NCCE).
Currently, the college has a total popula-
tion of about 3,000 students, including regu-
lar and sandwich students.
The library
The library has a total bookstock of about
30,000 volumes and 250 serial titles. It has a
total staff strength of 26. It serves a total
population of about 3,500 patrons, that is
both academic staff and students. Students
from neighbouring tertiary institutions also
make some use of the library.
Automating the library
The plan to automate the operations of the
library was conceived in 1995 but its imple-
mentation did not start until late in 1996.
The software used for this library automa-
tion programme is the Bookmaster Library
System Version 1.1. It is an integrated library
software written in, and usable from within
DBase IV. The software enables a library to
use a microcomputer to automate some data-
processing functions (Talent Development
Centre, 1995). Bookmaster is completely
menu driven and each of its menus or work
screens includes adequate instructions on
how to proceed. Bookmaster can perform the
following library data-processing functions:
• acquisitions;
cataloguing and indexing;
on-line public access to catalogue (OPAC);
• circulation;
serials control;
systems control.
From the main menu, various other sub-
menus and work screens are available:
(1) Cataloguing and indexing: update cata-
logue, browse catalogue, print catalogue
