Both the publications reviewed here make an important contribution to our understanding of many
of the consequences of longevity and the ageing of societies. Both books touch on the same,
socially significant issues. Although they have many similarities, their methodologies and the
individual themes they discuss are not identical.
Ageing, Ageism and the Law: European Perspectives on the Rights of Older Persons is a
monograph written by a number of authors who came together under the European Cooperation
in Science and Technology programme, an EU-funded programme which enables researchers and
innovators to set up their own research networks on a wide range of scientific topics. The book
contains numerous legal references, which may make it appeal specifically to lawyers, theorists
and practitioners, as well as those with an interest in public policy and administration.
The Future of Ageing in Europe. Making an Asset of Longevity is also a collective work. It is the
final product of a five-year international and interdisciplinary project entitled Mobilising the Potentil
of Active Ageing in Europe (MOPACT). It does not include all the many analyses carried out during
