The second section offers informative insights into how policy translates into practice
providing useful material and illustrating practitioner based issues. In Chapter 9, Approved
Social Worker and Senior Practitioner, Wendy Whitaker guides the reader through the role
and function of the Approved Social Worker (subsequently replaced by the Approved
Mental Health Professional), highlighting the shift from a medical perspective to a social
care framework incorporating rights based principles. The use of case scenarios provide
clarity to ‘real life’ situations encountered by practitioners and importantly suggests prac-
tical solutions to a variety of contexts within legal frameworks. Similarly, in Chapter 10,
a Consultant Child Psychiatrist, Dr Mary Mitchell, provides a concise overview of service
delivery, incorporating classification of diagnoses, management and concomitant treat-
ments available for young people with mental health difficulties. The case vignettes pro-
vide a deeper level of understanding by highlighting a variety of complex situations and
concepts whilst raising questions for consideration to ensure the best interests of the child
are met and legal principles applied.
The third and final section of the book tackles potentially problematic areas, such as
refusal of treatment decisions and the anomalies that arise. This is supported by relevant
case law examples and decisions which enables a deeper level of understanding. The
issues around confidentiality when working with children and young people are also dis-
cussed. Although this can be a ‘minefield’ for practitioners, Harbour presents clear legal
positions pertaining to statutory law and its application in practice.
Clearly written by the contributors, there are a number of strengths to this book: it is
logical in its design and structure; it is insightful and informative and provides a coherent
lucidity to a complex area. Thus, this renders it a valuable...
