developed a good understanding of how a prison works and how the
culture and living situation affects both staff and prisoners. Secondly,
they now have behind them the experience of having worked with some
men in, prison, and have begun to discover the various opportunities
and constraints of social work in that setting. Thirdly, this experience
will add another dimension to their approach when they are working in
the community and need to liaise and work with people in institutions,
as well as helping men on after-care. Several past students who did a
similar placement during training have confirmed this point. Finally, at
a general level, the more professional social workers who get this kind
of experience during training, the more understanding there should be
in social work of the impact of imprisonment. This one hopes will
contribute to a changing climate in attitudes both to offenders and to
those who are employed to look after them.
Important lessons were learned by tutors and supervisors concerning
the planning of this type of placement. Good preparation is crucial both
inside the institution and by the educational body. Pre-placement visits
by the students are likely to be beneficial. Many social work tutors
have very little, if any, experience of prison work, and they need to do
their preparation too! The allocation of work needs careful considera-
tion, and in particular the input of work through channels other than
the supervisor. The mutuality of learning was highlighted by what the
supervisors learned from the students who, as in other placements,
came to the situation in a fresh and stimulating frame of mind. Most
