pected
to
undergo
a
course
of
instruc-
ton.
But
can
we
really
be
happy
about
a
course
w.hich
can
be
completed
in
one
weekend’?
Sentencing
and
accumu-
lated
knowledge
about
Ü,
arse
sufficiency
complex
to
warrant
-training
more
de-
tailed
’than
that.
And
what
about
the
need
for
stipendiaries
to
have
a
similar
training?
There
is,
unfortunately,
still
widespread
currency
for
the
myth
that
a
barrister
with
long
experience
in
the
criminal
courts
&dquo;knows
the
criminal
mind&dquo;
and
is
thereby
qualified
to
pass
sentence.
Some
magistra,tes
arse
vitally
’interested
in
the
sentencing
process
and
have
become
experts
in
this
field,
but
of
how
many
can
this
be
said?
Sentencing
is,
of
course,
only
one
as-
pect
of
a
ma,gis,trate’s
job.
I
should
~re-
commend
.this
delightfully
readable
book
to
anyone
wishing
to
have
greater
un-
derstanding
of the
whole
range
of
ma,gis-
teria’I
functions.

There
appears
to
be
increasing

are
having
to

This
monograph
is
one
such
publication.
It
has
only
47
pages,
but
in
those
pages
are
brought
out
many
of
the
current
ideas
on
staff
supervision,
including
sections
on
the
role
of
the
senior,
the
&dquo;enabling&dquo;
func-
tions
of
the
supervisor,
the
.place
of
authority
in
social
work
administra~tion,
casework
supervision,
and
what
could
be
of
topical
interest
to
,the

a

The

in

made
up
of

three
igiven
