FIFTY YEARS AGO
[The following letter appeared in the Journal of the National Association of
Probation Oflicers No. 8, July 1917.]
To the Editor of the National Association of Probation Officers Journal.
Dear Sir,-Permit me on the behalf of the Executive to appeal to members
who are in arrears with their Annual Subscription. I am painfully conscious of
the fact that since the formation of the Association we have been largely
dependent on the generosity of the Chairman and his friends for the furtherance
of the object and aims of the Association. This ought not to be. I am sensible
of the strain which the war has imposed on many of our members. We are in
receipt of no war bonus, and it is a desperate struggle to provide things honestly
in the sight of all men; but I suppose we must all exercise patience and await
the Day of Judgment for the recompense of work conscientiously done, though
there is the reward which springs from the consciousness that we are rendering
a great service to our country through the great work of recovery in building up
a self-respecting man and womanhood from the scraps of civilisation.
I earnestly hope that this plea will be effectual. The Executive would deeply
regret the lapse of membership which must naturally follow non-compliance with
the rules of the Association.
Yours faithfully,
FREDERICK W. BARNETT.

These three little books are recent additions to the series published by the National
Institute for Social Work Training. The series as a whole was long overdue. It
was about time that somebody tried to make sense of the way in which training
for social work has developed. Professor Marjorie Smith’s study of Professional
Education for Social Work in Britain was first published in 1953 by the Family
