are
Tony
Parker’s
version
of
the
whole
affair,
and
the
ex-prisoner’s
version,
with
extracts
from
his
own
diary.
He
was
a
P.D.
man,
released
to
the
Hostel
Scheme
(where
little
contribution
seems
to
have
been
made
to
his
preparation
for
later
release)
and
on
his
final
release
he
got
himself
a
god
job.
No
adequate
ar-
rangements
were
made
for
his
after-
care
so
he
reported
himself
to
a
local
probation
officer
whose
initial
familiarity
put
him
off
but
who
later
improved
on
acquaintance
and
&dquo;if
he’d
more
time
and
a
smaller
case
load
we
might
even
develop
~a
useful
friendship&dquo;.
His
diary
vividly
describes
the
feelings
of
the
ex-
prisoner
with
a
long
record,
and
the
lack
of
any
purpose
in
his
life-so
that
once
the
novel~ty
of
freedom
had
worn
off
he
’became
somewhat
indifferent
about
his
future
and
it
was
as
easy
to
go
back
as
to
go
forward.
The
.book
is
salutary
reading
but
leaves
one
asking
what
prison
has
done - or
can
do ? -
for
such
a
man.

32s.
In
this
book,
a
new
factor
is
convincing-
ly
highlighted
in
the
heredity
and
en-
vironment
battle.
Dr.
Stott
proposes
that
disturbed
behaviour
need
not
necessarily
be
a
result
of
an
unsuitable
environ-
ment;
it
could
stem
from
a
congenital
cause
and
come
into
focus
when
there
are
stresses
on
the
child.
It
is
shown
that
in
the
sample
studied, a
consider-
able
proportion
of
the
disturbed
child-
ren
either
had
difficult
deliveries
or
their
mothers
were
subject
~to
an
amount
of
abnormal
strain
during
pregnancy.
Moreover,
this
theory
becomes
more
convincing
when
one
considers
the
ques-
tion
of
siblings
who
do
not
become
delinquent
or
emotionally
disturbed,
even
though
they
have
had
the
same
environment
and
upbringing
as
the
mal-
adjusted
member
of
the
family.
