URING THE TWO YEARS following the
companys rebranding from Pacific Access in
August 2002, Sensis has transformed into
an agile, responsive and inspiring company
to work for. This article explains how Sensis, a leading
Australian advertising and search company, launched a
long-term employee engagement initiative ensuring not
only corporate success in terms of superior profits, but
also significant, measurable improvements in
organizational health.
The starting point
In early 2001, the culture at Pacific Access was
sluggish, hierarchical, locally-focused, and
individualistic. There was little or no rigor in
organizational governance or people management. The
sales-driven, male-dominated culture disappointed
younger tertiary-educated staff who resigned more
often than not within two years of appointment. By
October 2001, unplanned turnover was at 45 percent,
and higher than 60 percent in front-line areas. Only
one female was in the thirteen-strong Executive
Leadership Team (ELT).
Retention of high-performing staff and
organizational knowledge were central people issues,
especially as a significant number of long-term
contractors supported the business. Employees
experienced significant frustration around
organizational effectiveness, as well as discontinuity
between what was promised and what was delivered.
