Ant for lighting the Streets, Lanes, and other
publick Paflages and Places, .within the City of
Carlijle^ in the County of Cumberland, and the
Suburbs of the laid City; for paving the Foot
Paths of the Streets of the faid City and Suburbs ;
and for otherwife improving the faid City.

HEREAS the City of Carlt/le^ in the County of Cumberland,
is a populous and trading City, and a Place of great Refort:
And whereas the Streets, Lanes, and o;her publick Paflages and
Places within the faid City, and the Suburbs
thereof,
are at prefent very
infufficiently lighted, and the Footpaths of the Streets of the faid City
and Suburbs are not properly flagged or paved : And whereas the Entrance
into the laid City by the prefenc Gate, called The Englijh Gate, is incom-*
modious and dangerous : And whereas Liberty hath been granted to the
Inhabitants of the faid City to open and make a proper Avenue, Way,
and Pafiage, from that Part of the Street called Botcbergate, which lies
within the Liberties of the faid City, through the Citadel into the faid
City : And whereas it would tend greatly to the Benefit and Safety of
the Inhabitants of the faid City and Suburbs, and of all Perfons reforting
thereto, or paffing through the fame, if the Streets, Lanes, and other

Ihall be, and they and their Succeflbrs (to be elected in Manner herein-
after mentioned), are hereby appointed Commiflioners for putting this
Aft ifi Execution.
For appointing IL And be it further enacted, That whefi and fo often as any df the
JioncK?mmii; Commiflioners herein named, or hereafter to be eldded, fhall die or re-
move out of the faid City or Suburbs, or (hall at any Time, during the
Space of One Year, refufe or negledt to a£t, fuch Death, Removal,

or Negledt to aft, being declared or notified at a publick Meeting
of the faid Commiflioners, then it fhall be lawful for the furviving or re-
maining Commiflioners, or any Seven or more of them, from Time to
Time, and they are hereby required to elcdt and appoint One or more
proper Perfon or Perfons refiding in the (aid City or Suburbs, to be a
Commiflioner or Commiflioners in the Place or Stead of him or them fo
dying, removing, refufing or neglecting tb aft, Ten Days publick No-
tice of the Time and Place of Meeting for every fuch Election being given
in Writing, figned by the Clerk to the faid Commiflioners, or by any Three
or more of them, and affixed on the Market Crofs of the faid Ciry of
Carlijle, and on fuch other Place or Places as the faid Commiflioners
fhall direct-, and every Perfon who (hall be fo appointed (having firft
taken and fubferibed the Oath herein-after direded to be taken and fub-
fcribed, and being qualified as herein-after is mentioned), {hall have the
fame Power and Authority for putting this Aft in Execution, as if he
had been exprefsly named and appointed a Commiflioner in and by this Aft*
Qualification HI. Provided always, and be it further ena&cd, That no Perfon fhall
