CISV International: Using
Technology for Communication in

Abstract
CISV (Children's International Summer Villages) is a unique charitable organi-
sation which was established by one person nearly fifty years ago to provide cul-
tural exchange opportunities for young people all over the world. Comprising
more than 40,000 members and volunteers from over 60 countries, speaking
many different languages, communication, information and records management
is challenging. This article discusses three areas, e-mail, electronic forms and
some of the organisation's publications, in which technology is being used to
improve effective and efficient communications and information management in
the context of a multi-lingual and truly global organisation.
Background
CHILDREN'S INTERNATIONAL SUMMER VILLAGES (CISV) is
a unique exchange organisation which offers a range of programmes to
young people across the global spectrum. There is no short or easy way
to describe the activities of CISV, define our aims and objectives or give
a flavour of the rich volunteer culture that is CISV so no apologies are
made for leaving such an exacting task to the 1996 Annual Report which
says:
"As a charitable independent non - political volunteer organisation pro-
moting peace education and cross - cultural friendship, CISV is unique -
the majority of its programmes are conducted for 11-16 year olds, whilst
most youth exchange programmes begin at 16.
CISV evolved from a conviction that peace is possible if individuals and
groups can learn to live together as friends. CISV has established its cre-
