CHAPTER cxcv.
An Act to empower the Corporation of London to construct
A.D.
1885.
a Bridge over the Kiver Thames near the Tower of London
with approaches thereto and for other purposes.
[14th August 1885.]
W
HEREAS the construction of a bridge over the River Thames
from a point in the river wall westwards of and near to
Irongate Stairs on the north to a point in the river wall at or near
to Hartley's Wharf on the south (herein-after referred to as " the
Tower Bridge ") in such manner as to admit of the passage at all
times of the tide of vessels navigating the said river together -with
approaches to the said bridge on either side of the said river would
be attended with local and public advantage :
And whereas the mayor and commonalty and citizens of the city
of London (in this Act referred to as " the Corporation ") are seised
of or entitled to certain messuages lands tenements and heredita-
ments in the city of London and in the counties of Middlesex Surrey
Kent and Essex (which are commonly called " the Bridge House
Estates") in trust for the maintenance and support of London
Bridge and by the Blackfriars Bridge Act 1863 and the Blackfriars
and Sbuthwark Bridges Act 1867 the Bridge House Estates are
made liable to the maintenance and support of Blackfriars Bridge
and Southwark Bridge:
And whereas it is expedient that power should be conferred on
the Corporation to construct the Tower Bridge and the said ap-
proaches and the works necessary for or incidental thereto respec-
tively and that for the purpose of defraying the cost of such con-
struction the Corporation should be empowered to raise the necessary
moneys on the credit of the said Bridge House Estates and of their
estates and revenues :
And whereas plans and sections showing the lines and levels of
the works authorised by this Act and also books of reference con-
taining the names of the owners and lessees or reputed owners and
lessees and of the occupiers of the lands required or which may be

for ^e purposes or under the powers of this Act were duly
deposited with the respective clerks of the peace for the county
of
Middlesex the city of London the liberty of Her Majesty's Tower of
London and the county of Surrey and are in this Act referred to as
the deposited plans sections and books of reference:
And whereas the purposes of this Act cannot be effected without
the authority of Parliament:
May it therefore please Your Majesty that it may be enacted
and be it enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty by and
with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal
and Commons in this present Parliament assembled and by the
authority of the same as follows :
Short
title.
1. This Act may be cited for all purposes as the Corporation of
London (Tower Bridge) Act 1885.
Interpreta- 2. In this Act the following words and expressions have the
tion. several meanings hereby assigned to them unless there be something
in the subject or context repugnant to such construction (that is to
say):
" The Corporation " shall mean the mayor and commonalty and
citizens of the city of London;
" The Improvement Act of 1847 " shall mean the London (City)
Improvement Act 1847;
"The Bridge House Estates" shall mean the messuages lands
tenements and hereditaments situate in the city of London and
in the counties of Middlesex Surrey Kent and Essex of or
to which the mayor and commonalty and citizens are seised
or entitled in trust for the maintenance and support of London
Bridge Blackfriars Bridge and Southwark Bridge;
"The Tower Bridge" shall mean the bridge by this Act
authorised;
"The works by this Act authorised" shall mean the Tower
Bridge the approaches thereto and the works in connexion
therewith respectively by this Act authorised;
In any enactment extended and applied to or incorporated with this
Act for the purposes of this Act and in this Act the expression
"justice" shall be construed to mean with respect to the city of
London and the liberties thereof the Lord Mayor or any alderman
or the recorder of the city of London and elsewhere any police
or stipendiary magistrate acting in and for the district in which the
matter referred to him arises and the expression " superior courts"
or "court of competent jurisdiction" or any other like term shall
have effect as if the debt or demand with respect to which it is used

were a simple contract debt and not a debt or demand created -A-0-1885.

This Act shall be carried into execution by the Corporation Corporation

dation Act 1845 incorporated therewith (excepting sections one
hundred and twenty-seven to one hundred and thirty-one both
inclusive thereof) and in the Lands Clauses Consolidation Acts
Amendment Act 1860 shall extend and apply to this Act with
reference to the .taking of lands situate in the city of London or
the liberties thereof the construction of the Tower Bridge and of the
approaches thereto and the works matters and things by this Act
authorised and the execution by the Corporation of this Act so far
as relates to the city of London and shall for the purposes of this
Act be of as full force and effect as if the same had been in this Act
repeated and re-enacted mutatis mutandis and made applicable to the
subject matter of this Act except only so far as the same or any of
them are altered or varied by or inconsistent with any of the
provisions of this Act;
For the purposes of such extension application and incorporation
the term " this Act " throughout the Improvement Act of 1847 shall
be read and have effect as meaning the present Act and the Improve-
ment Act of 1847 shall have effect subject and according to the
following modifications and provisions (namely) :
(1.) The expression in that Act "the mayor aldermen and
commons" shall mean the Corporation :
(2.) " Schedule" in that Act shall mean the deposited books of
reference and the provisions of that Act relating to the map or
plan deposited for the purposes thereof shall apply to the
deposited plans:
(3.) The persons to be summoned under section twenty-one of that
Act shall be persons qualified to serve-as special jurors and their
numbers shall be reduced to twenty-four and the jury shall
be struck in like manner as special juries may now be struck in
Her Majesty's High Court of Justice under an order of
the court or a judge
thereof:
(4.) The specification of any street lands work or thing in any
provision of this Act conferring powers on the Corporation shall
