thas come to our attention that comments made in our article Mental Health Promotion Theory and
Practice: Insights from a Literature Review, published in the International Journal of Mental Health Promotion
(1999, 1 (1) 37-43), have been
interpreted as reflecting negatively on both our colleagues in the SNAP group and the report produced by this
group (SNAP Report on Mental Health Promotion in Young People). We would like to point out that it was never
our intention either to malign
our colleagues or to denigrate the report. Rather, our comments about the SNAP group
and the intellectual challenges of putting this type of report together were intended to be used as an illustration
of wider intellectual tensions in the field of mental health
promotion. Further, our comments regarding the report were restricted to a draft
version of a document which is not yet complete. Werecognise that we may not have made this clear in our
introductoryremarks. Work is continuing and the final report will be published in the next few months.
We deeply regret any offence we may inadvertently have caused to our colleagues, and wish to state
categorically thatour involvement with this project has been a valuable and enriching experience.
While recognising that we were open to misinterpretation in some of our comments, we are also impressed
by the amount of debate and professional reaction that our paper appears to have generated. Our purpose in
writing the paper was to examine critically the field of mental health promotion. If the ensuing discussion is
indicative of the vitality of the field, we are pleased to have played a part in that process.
