An Act for disfranchising
Cranbourne Chase
in the
Counties of
Dorset
and Wilts. [ 23d May 1828.]
W
HEREAS the Right Honourable
George
Lord Rivers is or
claims to be the Owner of a certain Franchise or Chase called
Cranbourne
Chase,
extending over divers Manors and a large
Tract of Land and Ground situate and being in the several Counties of
Dorset
and Wilts, and as such Owner is possessed of divers valuable and
extensive Rights and Privileges over the same: And whereas the said
Lord Rivers, in right of the said Chase, hath constantly exercised and
still exercises the Privilege of feeding and preserving Deer within the said
Chase, and the Number of Deer now fed and preserved therein it is com-
puted amounts to upwards of Twelve thousand, but does not exceed
Twenty thousand, and the Deer range over the Property of the different
Proprietors of Land within the Limits of the said Chase: And whereas
the Exercise of such Privileges, and of feeding and preserving Deer in
right of the said Chase, is extremely injurious to the Owners of Lands
within the Limits of the said Chase, and is a great Hindrance to the
Cultivation of such Lands, and tends greatly to demoralize the Habits of
the labouring Classes of the Inhabitants residing in and near the said
Chase : And whereas the said Lord Rivers is willing to accept the clear
yearly Sum of One thousand eight hundred Pounds, to be apportioned
and made payable in the Manner herein-after directed or provided in that
Behalf,
as a Compensation and Satisfaction for the Extinguishment of his

said Franchise upon the said Chase; and the several Proprietors of Lands
within the Limits of the said Chase are willing to give the said Lord
Rivers, or other the Owner of the said Chase, the said clear yearly Sum
of One thousand eight hundred Pounds for the Extinguishment of his
said Franchise; but such beneficial Purposes cannot be carried into
Execution without the Aid and Authority of Parliament: May it there-
fore please Your Majesty that it may be enacted; and be it enacted by
the King's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the Advice and Consent
of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Par-
liament assembled, and by the Authority of the same, That
Philip Williams
of
Lincoln's
Inn in the County of
Middlesex,
Barrister at Law, shall be
and he is hereby appointed the Commissioner for apportioning the said
yearly Rent or Sum of One thousand eight hundred Pounds to be paid
to the said Lord Rivers in lieu of and as a Compensation and Satisfaction
for his said Franchise in
Cranbourne
Chase,
and for carrying into Execution
the other Purposes of this Act, pursuant to the Powers, Regulations, and
Directions herein-after contained in that
Behalf:
Provided that neither the
said
Philip Williams
nor any other Person shall be capable of acting as a
Commissioner in the Execution of this Act until he shall have taken and
subscribed an Oath, or, being a Quaker, an Affirmation, in the Form or
to the Effect following ; (that is to say,)

' do solemnly affirm,] That I will faithfully, impartially, and honestly,
1 according to the best of my Skill and Knowledge, execute the several
' Powers and Trusts reposed in me as a Commissioner under and by
* virtue of an Act passed in the Ninth Year of the Reign of King
George
* the Fourth, intituled [here set forth the Title of this Act], without
' Favour or Affection, Prejudice or Malice, to any Person or Persons
i whomsoever. So help me GOD.*
And any Justice of the Peace for either of the said Counties of
Dorset
or
Wilts
is hereby empowered to administer the said Oath; and the Oath so
taken and subscribed by the Commissioner, and also the Appointment of
every Commissioner in pursuance of this Act, shall be annexed to and de-
posited with the Commissioner's Award herein-after directed to
be
made.
II.
And be it further enacted, That in case the said Philip
Willidmi
shall die, or refuse to act, or become incapable of acting as a Commis-
sioner in the Execution of this Act, before all the Powers, Authorities,
and Trusts hereby reposed in the said Commissioner shall be fully executed
and performed, it shall be lawful for the major Part in Value (such Value
to be ascertained by the Land Tax Assessments) of the Proprietors of
Land within the Limits of the said Chase, or their respective Agents or
Attornies, who shall be present at
a
Meeting to be holden for that Purpose,
by Writing under their respective Hands to nominate and appoint One
other fit and proper Person (not interested in the Premises) to be a Com-
missioner in the Place of the said Philip
Williams
; provided that Ten
Days Notice of the Time, Place, and Purpose of such Meeting shall be
given by Three or more of the said Proprietors in like Manner as herein-
after is directed with respect to the Meetings of the said Commissioner;
and that such Meeting shall be holden at some convenient Place within
the Town of Blandford
Foreham
in the County of
Dorset,
or within the
10 Distance
