Order 2016
The Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015 (Commencement No. 5) Order 2016 (SI 2016/896) brings
certain provisions of the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015 (CJCA 2015) into force. This will amend
the Juries Act 1974 to increase the upper age limit for jury service to 75 years. The provisions come
partly into force on 9 September 2016 and are completely in force on 1 December 2016.
On 9 September 2016, s. 68(1), (3) CJCA 2015 came into force, making an amendment to s. 3 Juries
Act 1974. This changed the obligation for an electoral registration officer to deliver a copy of the
electoral register, indicating those who are too young or too old to serve on a jury, to use the upper
age limit of 75 years rather than the former limit of 70 years when determining who goes on the list.
On 1 December 2016, s. 68(1), (2) CJCA 2015 will come into force to amend s. 1 of the Juries Act
1974. This will increase the upper limit of the age for jury service to 75 years.
