Regina 'D.

THE accused in this case heard before
the
Manchester
Crown Court in April 1967 had driven amotor-car at a
police sergeant who was attempting to arrest him.
The
accused, accompanied by his wife, had left a club
and had stolen the car from a side street and was making his
'getaway' when police sergeant Cordingley tried to stop him.
The
car was driven at
the
sergeant, who, struck by the car,
landed spreadeagled on the bonnet.
In
his defence the accused alleged that when he saw
the
sergeant running up to him he thought it was the owner of
the
car and did not know it was a policeman.
The
prosecution,
however, alleged
that
the accused deliberately drove at the
sergeant, to which
the
accused replied that
the
sergeant sprang
on to the car.
The
sergeant, however, was driven on
the
bonnet
of
the
car through anumber of side streets and after going
some 400 yards
the
driver made a fast swerve in an attempt to
shake him off.
Then
the car crashed, and the accused ran
away.
There
was a further charge of causing grievous bodily
harm.
The
accused was found guilty of attempted murder and
was sentenced to five years' imprisonment.
