Statutes made at Westminster, Anno 42 Edw . III. and Anno Dom 1368 Estreats shall be shewed to the Party indebted, and that which is paid shall be totted. No Sheriff, &c. shall continue in Office above a Year.

(42 Edw. 3) C A P. IX.

‘ITEM, Whereas the green Wax is sent to Sheriffs to levy the King's Debts, the Sheriffs Ministers do levy the same by Rolls, and other Remembrances, and do not shew the same Estreats under the Seal of the Exchequer, so that which is once levied, cometh another Time in Demand, because that they do not charge them fully of that which is levied, in Deceit of the King, and Impoverishment of his People;’ '(2) it is ordained and assented, That a Man shall see the same Estreat sealed, and that the same which is paid, be totted, and the same Estreats sent to the Sheriffs upon the Receipt. (3) And if any Sheriff or Minister do to the contrary, he shall be charged to answer to the Party, which thereof will him complain, his treble Damages, and make Fine to the King. (4) And that he have his Suit as well before Justices of the Peace, as before other Justices. (5) * Andthat the Sheriffs be bound to accompt by the same Estreats so totted...
