DIALOGUE
AND DEBATE
N
VOLUME
7(1),
we
announced
our
intention
to
launch
a
new
section
in
Social &
Legal
Studies
which,
on
an
intermittent
basis,
would
promote
dialogue
and
debate
in
the
critical
socio-legal
field.
The
content
of
the
new
format
would
be
variable
and
might
include
brief
discussion
papers
around
a
specific
theme,
extended
review
articles
and
rejoinders
to
published
papers.
Our
first
essay
in
this
new
format
is
initiated
by
Nikolas
Rose
and
Mariana
Valverde
with
an
excellently
focused
short
paper
on
Foucault’s
governmen-
tality
thesis,
to
which
there
are
responses
by
Barbara
Hudson
and
Duncan
Ivison
on
governmentality
and
punishment
and
governmentality
and
race.
A
third
response
by
Frank
Pearce
and
Steve
Tombs
raises
the
relationship
between
Foucault
and
Marxism.
With
the
original
paper,
these
comments
begin
to
locate
the
importance
of
Foucault’s
later
work
for
critical
socio-legal
studies,
both
in
terms
of
specific
areas
and
in
terms
of
broader
theoretical
issues.
We
hope
the
short
discussion
format
is
helpful
in
terms
of
providing
an
accessible
way
into
such
matters
for
students
and
academics
alike,
and
that
the
views
expressed
will
provoke
others
to
consider
if
they
would
like
to
con-
tinue
the
debate.
Issues
raised
but
not
yet
considered
could
include,
for
example,
the
relevance
of
Foucault
to
the
family
and
to
sexuality,
as
well
as
broader
theoretical
questions
about
the
nature
of
Foucaultian
theory
and
its
relationship
to
structuralist
and
poststructuralist
thought.
These
are
just
suggestions,
for
we
have
said
that
the
success
of
a
dialogue
and
debate
section
would
depend
on
the
ideas
of
our
readers
and
writers.
If
you
have
thoughts
along
these
or
other
lines,
please
contact
one
of
the
editors
of
this
special
section.
If
the
format
sparks
an
idea
for
a
somewhat
different
section,
we
would
also
like
to
hear
from
you
(please
contact
Alan
Norrie).
It
could
involve
empirical
or
theoretical
material
of
a
wide-ranging
kind -
we
would
like
to
reflect
in
particular
the
international
aims
of
the
journal -
and
could
involve
different
formats
from
the
present.
