DISCRIMINATION LAW ASSOCIATION
At
a conference held
on
Saturday 18 March at the Law Society
in London it was unanimously agreed to establish a Discrimination
Law Association. The conference, opened
by
Diane Abbott MP, was
attended by over 50 discrimination law practitioners, including soli-
citors, barristers, racial equality officers, law centre workers and rep-
resentatives
of
the Commission for Racial Equality and Equal Oppor-
tunities Commission.
The new Association's objects include:
'to
promote and improve
the giving
of
advice to, the representation of, and support to com-
plainants
of
discrimination, harassment
or
abuse including such
grounds as: race, gender, religion, disability, sexual orientation, age,
health status, political opinion, marital
or
family status,
and
trade
union affiliation
or
activity, arising out
of
any legislation
or
principle
of
law, whether
UK,
European
or
international in origin'.
The
new
association is open to anyone who substantially engages in,
or
is
interested in, discrimination law and in agreement with the objects
of
the Association.
At
the first Executive Committee meeting, held
on
17 April,
officers were elected (Chair: Geoffrey Bindman; Treasurer: Maujit
Gill; Secretary: Paul Crofts) and amongst others, the following points
were decided.
1.
Directory /Questionnaire to members
The possibility
of
a directory containing information
on
members
interests
was
discussed
to
encourage
networking.
2. Seminars
These would be arranged in the future, with compensation/remed-
ies and disability legislation as the first two topics.
3. Discounts
of
subscriptions for members
Substantial discounts
on
the new International Journal
of
Discrim-
ination and the
Law
were arranged with the possibility
of
more to
follow. Details would
be
circulated to members.
4. Regional Developments
Regional meetings were to be encouraged with the prospect
of
a
meeting shortly in Sheffield.
5. Newsletter to members/caselaw sharing.
It
was agreed that as soon as practicable a newsletter would be set
up and summaries
of
cases circulated to members.
