Reflecting on the overall content for this issue consisting of Evaluation Journal of
Australasia (EJA) news, overview of articles, and editorial, the theme of transitions
surfaced. Transitions can appear seamless and sometimes without reflecting on how
or why change occurred. Drawing on the adage ‘it takes a village to raise a child’, so
too has it taken ‘a village’ to grow a journal as unique as the EJA. A village consist-
ing of past and present Australasian Evaluation Society (AES) members, editors,
authors, reviewers, postgraduate students and evaluation practitioners. All continue
to play a major role in the growth of the journal.
Over the years, the EJA has benefited from strong stewardship provided by editors
committed to a journal that would further the aims of the AES in promoting the theory,
research and practice of evaluation. Articles of professional merit on any subject con-
nected with evaluation, together with book reviews and example of professional prac-
tice are published in the journal. Under the editors’ guidance, the journal grew from
strength to strength. Their vision, dedication, time (voluntary) and persistence laid the
solid foundation for the current professional standing and quality of the journal.
The journal has transitioned across time. Earlier publications of the Australasian
Evaluation Society included The Bulletin of the Australasian Evaluation Society
(ISSN 1030-6463) (November 1987 to May 1989). The Evaluation News and
Comment (ISSN 1039-8473) was published between November 1992 and June 2000.
The two merged into the new series of EJA with a name change in November/
December 1989 to the EJA (ISSN 1035-719X). The current format of the EJA com-
menced in 2001. Editors from this point on include Doug Fraser (2002–2003), Editor,
News and unrefereed articles; Colin Sharp Editor, (News and refereed articles);
Herbert Stock; Rick Cummings (2003); Rosalind Hurworth (2004–2012); Delwyn
Goodrick (2004–2010); Graeme Harvey (2011–2014); Janet Clinton (2013–2016);
and Liz Gould, Carol Quadrelli, Bronwyn Rossingh (2016–present) and Lyn Alderman
(2013–2018). A dedicated village of volunteers behind the scenes have supported edi-
tors over the years.
New initiatives have been undertaken in this time such as a special student edition
(2010), and in 2012, a special edition on evaluation in Indigenous settings with editors
Rosalind Hurworth and Graeme Harvey (2012) noting ‘one of the first references we
could find concerning working with Indigenous groups and of being culturally aware
