It was a great honour to be approached by SAGE back in April to succeed Professor Jenny McEwan as
the new Editor of Evidence and Proof from June. Jenny is stepping down after six successful years in the
role, during which time the journal continued to grow from strength to strength. Its international read-
ership continues to expand and it remains the leading peer-reviewed specialist journal in the fields of
evidence, proof and procedure, broadly defined. I would like to extend my thanks to Jenny for her gui-
dance and advice during the handover period, and I am delighted to report that she has agreed to remain
as a member of the Editorial Board.
I would like extend a brief word of thanks to Livia Melandri, Madiha Chaudry and Nav Kundal at
the SAGE offices at Oliver’s Yard, London for welcoming me to the journal and for providing me with
excellent advice in mapping the road ahead. The challenge ahead, on my part, is not only to maintain
the journal’s reputation as the international leader in the field, but to continue to grow and expand the
journal’s reputation for excellence and rigour. I am confident that the journal will continue to provide a
forum for the dissemination of outstanding and innovative scholarship, and will furnish its readership
with valuable analysis and insights needed to drive research (and hopefully practice) forwards. In an
ever more crowded journal market, this is far from being a straightforward task, but I am confident that
it can be accomplished with the support of our publishers, Board members, subscribers and readers
across the globe.
Three other members of the Board have also decided that now is an appropriate time to stand aside.
I would extend my sincere thanks to our outgoing Case Note Editor, Andrew Roberts, our outgoing
Book Reviews Editor, Roderick Bagshaw, and Andrew Hall QC for their loyal years of service to the
journal. I wish them all the very best for the future and I am sure they wi ll continue to support the
journal in whatever way they can. The new Case Note Editor is Dr Mark Coen (University College
Dublin), and Dr Imogen Jones (University of Birmingham) takes up the reins as Book Reviews Editor.
Both are passionate and enthusiastic upcoming scholars, and will undoubtedly bring fresh ideas to
advance their sections of the journal. Other new members of the Board are Adrian Waterman QC
(Doughty Street Chambers) and Dr Liz Heffernan (Trinity College Dublin). I would also extend a
warmwelcomebacktotheBoardtooneofourformer editors, Professor Paul Roberts (University
of Nottingham).
Over the course of the forthcoming months, we will be considering ways in which we can enhance the
journal. As the old adage states, ‘if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it’, so while I doubt very much that any radical
changes to the journal are needed, I am keen to hear from past authors and readers who might have sug-
gestions as to how it might be improved. The most imminent change on the horizon is a shift to an elec-
tronic submission platform, which is currently under way. This will mean that authors and reviewers will
now handle everything online, which should streamline our submission, review, editorial and production
processes. I look forward to the forthcoming months and years with a tremendous sense of anticipation,
and have every expectation that the journal will continue to build on our past success in times ahead.
To finish on a more poignant note, I was deeply saddened to learn that one of our Board members,
Professor Mike Redmayne, recently lost his battle with cancer. In addition to being an international
