Over the past couple of years editorial control of the European Journal of Political
Theory has been passed from Professor Jeremy Jennings and Peter Lassman to Dr
Steve Buckler and Dr Richard North (both of the University of Birmingham).
Jeremy and Peter founded the EJPT some eight years ago and under their editor-
ship it has grown into a flourishing and intellectually stimulating journal that has
set high standards of academic excellence and found an appreciative and ever-
growing readership across the globe. The new editors would like to express their
thanks to Jeremy and Peter and congratulate them on the fine work they have
done with the journal over the years. It is our hope that we can live up to the
high standards that have been set and build on the success of the journal since its
foundation.
Over the last eight years the EJPT has gained an enviable reputation as a journal
that publishes high-quality articles in the history of political thought and particu-
larly in the history of ideas in Europe. We will continue to welcome submissions
on debates emerging from the development of national traditions of European
scholarship, but would also emphasize that contributions to political theory in
the widest possible sense are welcomed. We particularly encourage contribu-
tions in analytical and normative political philosophy, as well as the history of
political thought and ideas from Ancient Greece through to the 20th century.
The Journal will continue to feature occasional special issues, under the direction
of a guest editor, dealing with a particular theme or topic as in the case of this
issue which has been edited by Duncan Bell on the subject of Republicanism and
Global Justice. Also forthcoming is a special issue on Political Realism, which
will include contributions from William Galston, John Horton, Richard Bellamy,
Mark Philp and Glen Newey.
We will continue to have a reviews section in each issue of the journal. This
has been edited by Dr Richard Shorten (also at the University of Birmingham) for
the last two years and he will remain in this role. The reviews section serves as an
important part of the journal’s remit to promote the study of political thought and
