This special issue of the New Journal of European Criminal Law is dedicated to Scott Crosby who
left us in April 2020. In 2006 Scott founded the Journal of European Criminal Law, the predecessor
of the New Journal of European Criminal Law. And since then until his passing, he has been for 14
years the Editor in Chief, life and soul, of what has now become one of the most important points of
references for scholars an d practitioners working in the area of EU Criminal Law; a journa l
publishing contributions by leading scholars in this area, which are quoted before the Court of
Justice, by high profile practitioners who are on the forefront of legal practice, and the defence of
human rights, in national and international jurisdictions, and by national ministers, and EU Com-
missioners; but which is equally proud to be a platform for young scholars who are setting their
first steps in academia.
The issue is diverse and eclectic, and we could not think of a better way to honor Scott’s
multifaceted and rich personality. It includes longer academic articles on a range of topics which
were at the core of Scott’s work and interests, and shorter more personal accounts of what a great
and inspiring colleague, mentor, and friend Scott was. A common unifying theme however
emerges throughout all the contributions. This is Scott’s unshakeable dedication to the fight for
justice and the respect of fundamental rights, and a commitment by his colleagues to continue fight
this battle he was so passionate about.
As editors of the New Journal of European Criminal Law, in our small way, we would also like
to re-state our commitment to keep the New Journal of European Criminal Law as the platform for
reporting, discussing, and critically appraising this fight for justice, human rights and rule of law in
Europe and beyond.
Thank you Scott for having started this beautiful project; for having shaped and directed the
journal with academic rigour and creativity; for having been a fantastic colleague to work with,
always cooperative and attentive to the opinion of the whole team, including that of the most junior
members, whom you have empowered and trusted from day one. We will do our best to continue
what you have started, and we won’t let you down.
