In this issue, James Hand analyses protection from discrimination for activities which are
not covered by the Equality Act 2010, notably political affiliation and activities, includ-
ing membership of trade unions and political groups and past misbehaviour. Hand
discusses the implications of the Redfearn case, where a minibus driver was dismissed
for being a member of the British National Party, which raised questions regarding his
right to freedom of association. The UK government responded by amending the
relevant employment law, but Hand questions whether it would be better to revise the
Equality Act itself to broaden the range of protected characteristics. Although the Act
