Introduction

When companies and organizations crafted their 2020 plans, little did they know that a pandemic would cause a storm of epic proportions in major capitals and economic sectors around the world. This initiative, a themed issue of the journal has been in response to this crisis of COVID-19 which is fast emerging as one of the greatest challenges for this generation from a global perspective. Previous generations in the recent past have experienced global financial crisis but this is current crisis with COVID-19 is unprecedented. It is causing a major challenge to our health as a global society and straining the health services of nations across the world. As a result of the responses needed to manage COVID-19 it is clear that there is a financial crisis fast emerging globally and many countries are already in recession. And it is worth noting that the responses to the onset of the financial crisis are limited due to the COVID-19 and the restrictions on movement at international, national and local levels.

This Special Issue aims to capture from a global perspective the impact of COVID-19 on the energy sector. There are contributions from around the world from Asia, to Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. However, one of the interesting perspectives we have tried to add is a policymaker and academic perspective. Contributing academic researchers were encouraged to seek out policymakers so that their contribution would be potentially more impactful and realistic in light of COVID-19. We utilised in the majority of cases authors who represent the Centre of Energy, Petroleum and Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP) at the University of Dundee whether they are alumni, current CEPMLP researchers, and members of CEPMLP teaching staff; and the three of us writing this editorial are alumni, staff and a current PhD student respectively! It should be recognised many Alumni have contributed and CEPMLP holds a 5000+ worldwide alumni and this is clear in the different contributions and the topics of the contributions. We hope also that this Themed Issue will inspire other groups/institutions to submit Special Issues.
