Many people made this issue of IJ on diasporas possible, and while we can-
not thank them individually here, we are grateful for their contributions.
There are two people, however, whom we must mention by name, for with-
out their efforts, this project would never have seen the light of day. They
are Jack Jedwab, executive director of the Association for Canadian Studies,
and IJ's own managing editor, Rima Berns-McGown, whom we are pleased
to showcase here with her academic hat on, as a diaspora specialist.
Most of the articles were presented at or inspired by a February 2007
seminar on “Diasporas, transnationalism and foreign policy,” sponsored by
the Association for Canadian Studies, in partnership with the Réseau
Moyen-Orient of the Centre d’études et de recherches internationales de
l’Université de Montréal and Alliance (a joint initiative of Columbia
University and the Université de Paris-Sorbonne). The seminar first met at
Columbia University before moving on to the Université de Montréal. It
was supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International
Trade Canada, to which we also extend our gratitude.
