Abstract
Purpose The purpose of this study is to nd out:gender, social and emotional factors as obstacles that
inuenceGeneration Z in using e-Books.
Design/methodology/approach The method in this study is exploratoryquantitative research that
was conducted by testing the factors that inuence the use of e-Books by Generation Z. This study was
analyzed using structure equation model, which involves regressions, measuringdirect and indirect effects
and path analysis. Social inuence, emotional attachment and gender are suspected to be a barrier in the use
of e-Booksby Generation Z.
Findings The results of this study indicate that social inuence and gender do not affect the use of
e-Books,in which only emotionalattachment directly affects the preference towardse-Book.
Research limitations/implications The limitation of this study is that the sample used is still in
GenerationZ in Indonesiaso that further research can use samples from various countries.
Practical implications The results of this studycan be used as a consideration for e-Books Publishers
to create e-booksas readers wish, for example, there is a special soundwhen opening e-Books, there is an easy
featureto give notes in e-Booksand features are presented to immediately see the link in the e-Books.
Social Implications Generation Z is actuallyready to use e-Books for reading activities. However, there
are several things that make them consider reading e-Books. what they consider is the ease of use and the
usefulness of the E-Books for their daily needs. Therefore, managers of information institutions and
informationproviders in Indonesia can at least consider whatgenre of e-books collection can be provided and
for whom the e-booksare intended.
Originality/value This research shows that Generation Z in choosing a reading format will be
inuenced by the intention of using the readingformat, whereas the intention is inuenced by the attitude in
determiningthe reading format.

Bower and Christensen (1995) interpreted disruption (in the industrial eld) as the
replacement of the "old market" to a more efcientand comprehensive "new market, the old
system replaced by a more innovativenew system, old players replaced by new players and
old technology (physical)replaced by new technology (digital). This disruptionoccurs due to
the development of internet technology and cyberspace in industrial activities that enable
the replacement of human labor to be replacedby mechanical or robot power. One that has
also been disrupted is the formatof the information source media, which usedto be available
in print and now shifted in digital or e-Book form. E-Booksare electronic books or books in
digital form, consisting of text, images or both, that can be read on a computer or other
electronic device(Gardiner and Musto, 2010).
In Indonesia, The Ministry of National Education has purchased the copyrights of
textbooks from authors/publishers. Furthermore, these books are presented in the form of
electronic books (ebooks) with the name Electronic School Books (BSE) ranging from early
childhood education to high school. https://bse.belajar.kemdikbud.go.id/. The results of
research conducted by Janah et al. (2018),Pratama and Firmansyah (2020) BSE has not been
fully utilized because of the lack of knowledge of electronic books and information
technology facilitiesavailable in schools. The results of research conducted by Pratama and
Firmansyah (2020)show that students will use e-books 2.4 times more if they know BSE.
The higher education libraries also use collection development budgets to purchase
e-Books or e-journals (Srirahayu, 2018). A similar occurrence also happens in many
bookstores in Indonesia that selle-Books nowadays, wherein 2010 printed books dominates
the market as much as 60% and in 2018, the number is almost replaced by e-Books of 58%,
causing the number of visitors to bookstores to decrease since people are switching to an
online bookstore. For instance, now Gramedia bookstore does not only provide printed
books but also e-Books, the store adapts to modernity which now utilizes online media
(Prinslo, 2019). Digital native is a picture of the current generation. Digital Native is a
generation born in the 1980s. According to McCrindle (2014), digital native includes
Generation Y and Generation Z.Generation Z is the internet generation, while Generation Y
is the generation that is still undergoing a period of transition to the Internet. Generation Z
was born in 19952009. They are also a generation that is synonymous with the use of
gadgets in all the activitiesthey do.
Research on the factors that inuence the use of e-Books has been widely carried out abroad.
However, this excludes research on Generation Z that is still limited. In Indonesia, direct research
into the acceptance of e-Books by communities, especially Generation Z, has been conducted as
done by Suyatna (2018) which shows that the book format used in learning does not inuence
learning outcomes. This is also supported by Srirahayus research (2020) which was conducted
with a qualitative method that the use of the book format depends on the information needs of
generation Z. Research conducted by Pratama (2020) on the acceptance of e-learning with TAM by
middle and high school students as well become one of the studies that can be used as a reference in
this study. This research is a development of previous research by adding gender, social inuence
to use printed books and emotional attachment towards printed books as moderation inuencing
intention to use e-book by Generation Z. This research focuses on factors that inuence the
acceptance of e-Books by Generation Z by using two major theories that are often used for
technology acceptance by users, namely, Theory Acceptance Model (Davis, 1989)andTheory
diffusion of innovation (Rogers, 1983). From the results of the study above, the digital generation
prefers to use printed books because of social inuence to use printed books, emotions towards
printed books and gender. Hence, this research also places social inuence to use printed books,
emotions towards printed books and gender as variables that can inhibit e-Book acceptance.
