GeoScienceWorld: the organization
GeoScienceWorld
TM
(GSW) is a
non-profit corporation formed by a
group of leading geoscientific
organizations for the purpose of making
geoscience research and related
information easily and economically
available via the internet (www.
geoscienceworld.org/misc/about.dtl).
GSW represents a major collaboration
among six leading geoscience societies
and one institute, notably:
.American Association of Petro-
leum Geologists (AAPG).
.American Geological Institute
(AGI).
.Geological Society of America
(GSA).
.The Geological Society of London
(GSL).
.Mineralogical Society of America
(MSA).
.Society for Sedimentary Geology
(SEPM); and
.Society of Exploration Geophysi-
cists (SEG).
Within its multifaceted vision
statement, the GSW seeks to ``better
integrate geoscience research from
different disciplines and multiple
sources''; ``increase accessibility, use,
and preservation of past literature'';
``enhance and expedite literature
searches for research and information'';
and ``respond to evolving research,
presentation, education, and technology
opportunities in the electronic
information age for the creation,
maintenance, operation, dissemination,
and preservation of geoscience
information and interactive abilities''
dtl).
GSW portal
To realize its vision, the GSW has
set forth a bold mission that articulates
the nature and purpose of its associated
information service GSW (www.
geoscienceworld.org), namely its intent
``to be the most comprehensive, widely-
accessible, easy to use, integrated, and
cost-effective online resource for
journals in the geological and earth
sciences'' (www.geoscienceworld.org/
misc/about.dtl). Launched on February
25, 2005, GSW `` ...provides access to
scientifically peer-reviewed full-text
articles from high impact geoscience
publications with linking between cited
references and articles within the GSW
database and outside of GSW through
CrossRef'' (www.geoscienceworld.org/
subscriptions/subscribe.dtl). It is a
``comprehensive internet resource for
research and communications in the
geosciences, built on a core database
aggregation of peer-reviewed journals
indexed, linked, and inter-operable with
GeoRef'' (www.geoscienceworld.org/
misc/about.dtl).
GeoRef is the most comprehensive
database in the geosciences, containing
more than ``2.6 million references to
geoscience journal articles, books,
maps, conference papers, reports and
theses'' (www. agiweb.org/georef/
index.html). It ``covers the geology of
North America from 1785 to the present
and the geology of the rest of the world
from 1933 to the present''
index.html). ``A subscription to GeoRef
is a required part of the GSW
subscription either through an existing
vendor arrangement or through GSW''
subscriptions/subscribe.dtl).
