I treasure Peter Drucker's book Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices (HarperCollins, 1973) for its simple clarity. It points out that the first duty of a professional was spelled out 2,500 years ago in the Hipprocratic oath: "Above all, do not knowingly do harm."

"No professional can promise that he will indeed do good for his client," Drucker writes. "But he can promise that he will not knowingly do harm."
