Evaluation Perspectives
In this issue, we share another profile in our ‘Evaluation Perspectives’ series. Dr Lyn
Alderman is the former Chief Evaluator in the Australian Department of Social
Services. Her professional experience spans the government, non-profit, corporate,
higher education and vocational education sectors. In this piece, we also acknowledge
Lyn’s contributions to evaluation as the former President of the Australasian Evaluation
Society (AES) (2014–2018), and Editor of this journal (2012–2018). Thanks to
Bronwyn Rossingh for coordinating this feature in December 2018.
How did you become involved in evaluation?
To be an evaluator you first need to be an expert in something. I started my working
career as a secretary and then moved into vocation education to teach my trade –
business administration. Through teaching, I became inquisitive about adult educa-
tion and completed my Bachelor of Education (Adult Education) at the same time
that vocational education was moved under the New South Wales Department of
Education in the 1990s. These two things are interesting as I was one of the few
