Abstract
Purpose – This study aimed to investigate the factors that inuence job satisfaction of academic
librarians in university libraries in Edo and Delta states in Nigeria.
Design/methodology/approach The study adopted a descriptive survey design using 88
academic librarians in the university libraries in the two states. Total enumeration sampling technique
was used for this study. All 88 librarians in the federal, state and private university libraries in Édo and
Delta states of Nigeria were considered appropriate for this study. The instrument used for data
collection was self-structured questionnaire, and all 88 respondents in this study responded to the
questionnaire.
Findings – Five factors capable of inuencing job satisfaction of employees – work environment,
remuneration, fairness, promotion and training – were expatiated upon to ascertain their inuence on
librarians’ job satisfaction. The result revealed that all the variables signicantly inuence librarians’
job satisfaction which serves as stimulus for employee’s productivity and delivery of quality services to
clientele.
Originality/value – This research is the rst to ascertain the factors that inuences job satisfaction of
academic librarians in university libraries in Edo and Delta states of Nigeria.

Introduction
The core duty of a librarian is to render adequate and effective services to clientele,
irrespective of the size or type of library. Library users who are able to access
information materials in a timely manner and in the correct format for their use should
always desire to patronize such a library. Rendering of adequate services to clientele can
be fullling when a librarian is satised with his or her job. Job satisfaction regulates
peace of mind and fosters relaxation leading to more enthusiasm, as well as more
innovative work (Maher, 2004). Similarly, Ogungbeni and Ogungbo (2013) described job
satisfaction as simply how people feel about their jobs and different aspects of their jobs.
Job satisfaction is a key element of motivation which gives employees energy to
continue to perform their job adequately and effectively. It is dened as the extent to
which people like (satisfaction) or dislike (dissatisfaction) their jobs (Spector, 1997). An
