1. ABOUT FAIR TRIALS INTERNATIONAL
Fair Trials International (FTI) is a UK-based NGO that works for fair trials according
to internationa l standards of justice and defends the rights of those fa cing criminal
charges outside of their own country. FTI provides direct legal assistance to hundreds
of people every year, ma ny of whom have suered grievous huma n rights abuses,
mistreatment, or have been the v ictims of miscarriage of justice .
With its unique casework perspective, FTI identies common examples of injustice
and discr imination faced by defendants around the world and uses that evidence to
design research a nd campaign s tackli ng the root caus es of injustice a nd inuence
policy development to secure improvements in acce ss to justice and fundamental
rights .
In this Case Notes series for the Journal of Europea n Criminal Law, FTI highlight
cases t hat demonstrate some of t he recurrent violations of fundamental rig hts faced
by defendants across Europe a nd the need for urgent action to overcome the exist ing
barriers to fair cros s-border criminal justice.
2. SYMEOU CASE: BACKGROUND
Andrew Symeou is a 20 year old British citizen from Eneld, UK. In July 2007 he went
on holiday wit h friends to Za nte, Greece. In the early hours of 20 July 2007 a young
British man (Jonathan Hiles) was punched and fell from an unguarded stage platform
in the ‘Rescue’ nightclub in Zante. As a resu lt of his fal l, Mr Hiles sustained serious
head injuries, became u nconscious and died two days later.
