Green paper boosts parental leave.

Businesses could be asked to provide two weeks' paid paternity leave, six months' paid maternity leave and to extend unpaid maternity leave so that new mothers could stay at home for a year, under proposals in the government's green paper on working rights, currently under consultation.

"The time is now right to tackle the issue of how to put in place measures which will allow parents to hold down jobs and also discharge their responsibilities as parents," said Stephen Byers, trade and industry secretary.

But according to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the measures could cripple businesses, particularly smaller ones, with further costs and regulation. "Large firms have resources to cover the extra absence and costs, but lots of smaller firms would struggle," warned John Cridland, deputy director-general of the CBI.
