The Hallmarking (International Convention) (Amendment) Order 1981

The Secretary of State, in exercise of his powers under sections 2(3) and 21(3) of the Hallmarking Act 1973(a) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:—

1. This Order may be cited as the Hallmarking (International Convention) (Amendment) Order 1981 and shall come into operation on 8th May 1981.

2. Article 6 of the Hallmarking (International Convention) Order 1976(b) is hereby amended by the addition after paragraph (2)(b) of the following sub-paragraph:—

"(c) a new sub-paragraph were added after paragraph (2)(e) substituting in section 4(3)(b)(ii) of the Act "550" for "650".".

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This Note is not part of the Order.)

This Order, which is made under the Hallmarking Act 1973, amends the Hallmarking (International Convention) Order 1976 and thereby implements an amendment, which came into force on 14th July 1980, to the Convention on the Control and Marking of Articles of Precious Metals done at Vienna on 15th November 1972 (Cmnd. 7219).

The Order reduces the minimum fineness permissible for solder used in articles of silver from 650 to 550, where an article is submitted to an assay office with a written request that it be marked as being of a fineness of 800 or 830 as respects the article as a whole or its silver parts.
