The Hire-Purchase (Increase of Limit of Value) (Great Britain) Order 1983

Whereas a draft of this Order has been laid before Parliament and approved by resolution of each House:

Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred upon Her by section 3 of the Hire-Purchase Act 1965(a) and section 3 of the Hire-Purchase (Scotland) Act 1965(b), is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:—

1. This Order may be cited as the Hire-Purchase (Increase of Limit of Value) (Great Britain) Order 1983 and shall come into operation on 1st June 1983.

2. Subsections (2), (3)(b) and (4) of section 2 of the Hire-Purchase Act 1965 and of section 2 of the Hire-Purchase (Scotland) Act 1965 are hereby further amended by the substitution for "£5,000" wherever it occurs of "£7,500".

3. The Hire-Purchase (Increase of Limit of Value) (Great Britain) Order 1978(c) is hereby revoked.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This Note is not part of the Order.)

In section 2 of the Hire-Purchase Act 1965 (which applies to England and Wales) and in section 2 of the Hire-Purchase (Scotland) Act 1965, as amended, it is provided that references to hire-purchase agreements and conditional sale agreements in Parts II, III and IV of each Act and references to credit-sale agreements in Part II of each Act shall be construed as references to such agreements under which the hire-purchase price or total purchase price, as the case may be, does not exceed £5,000.
