TEXT The government of president Suharto continues its rigid
intolerance of political activity, imposing restraints that result ina widerange of human rights
violations. Tight control is maintained over thought and speech. Over one hundred political
trials were conducted around the country in 1989 and early 1990. "Justice" remains up forsale.
Security forces routinely engage inabusive practices that go virtuallyunpunished. Dissident,
whether from students, intellectuals, Muslim teachers or ethnic nationalist is not tolerated.
Books, both Indonesian and foreign, which portray Suharto or his government in an
unfavorable light or which present alternatives to the "official version" of Indonesia are
banned. An anti-communist witch-hunt continues toaffect millions of people. Prisoners linked
in a coup attempt in 1965 are being executed, 25 years after their arrest. Despite these
