1. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE NINTH SPECIAL SESSION
INTRODUCTION
is contribution summaris es highlig hts of the ninth special session of the United
Nations Huma n Rights Council (Council). e ninth special ses sion was held on 9
and 12 January 2009 in order to consider the grave violations of human rights i n
the Occupied Palestinian Territory, particularly due to t he recent Israeli milita ry
attacks agai nst the occupied Gaza Strip. e Spe cial Session was origina lly requested
by the Permanent Representat ive of Cuba to the United Nations O ce at Geneva (as
President of the Non-Aligned Movement), the Perma nent Representative of Egypt to
the United Nations Oce at Geneva (as President of the Group of Arab States and
Coordinator of the Group of African States), a nd the Permanent Representative of
Pakistan to the United Nations Oce at Geneva (as Coordinator of the Organiz ation
of Islamic Conference). e request was supported by more than one-th ird of the
membership of the Council.1
