ICL'S AUTUMN
COLLECTION
The hardware and software
announced last month by ICL has
resulted in a considerable improve-
ment in the price/performance ratio
for purchasers of the new equipment.
Existing users of 2900 processors are
going to be offered attractive options
to allow them to enhance their instal-
led products to bring them into line
with the new advantages.
Foremost in the hardware are two
microcoded processors, the medium-
sized 2955 and the larger and more
powerful 2966. Based on the 2946,
the 2955 is a microcoded system with
a comprehensive set of facilities
designed to be attractive to first time
users.
The 2955 offers approximately
20 per cent more power than the
2950/20. An average system with an
Order Code Processor, Store Control
Unit, two megabytes of store, a
Device Control Unit, and a full range
of peripherals costs approximately
£340,000.
The 2955 minimum configuration
comprises one Order Code Processor,
one Store Control Unit and two
megabytes of main store, a Device
Control Unit, containing a Synchron-
ous Multi Line Communications Con-
troller and an Operating Station. The
maximum store size is four megabytes
and the largest system has three
DCUs. The 2955 initially supports
the VME/K operating system and
CME/2.
It is planned to extend this
support to include TME, the Transac-
tion Processing Environment on the
ICL ME29, at a later date.
2946 systems already installed can
be field-upgraded to the 2955. The
