Questions on individual articles typically asked for empirical data on the impact of
legislative or other programs on the status of women; for current, contextual statistics on
the position of women; for details of special programs and policies aimed at improving
the position and status of women; and the functions and structure of relevant government
departments.
The 13th Session of CEDAW
The 13th session will be held in New York from 17January to 4 February 1994, preceded
by a one week pre-session working group. The Committee also requested that the 14th
and 15th sessions also be extended by a week to assist in reducing the backlog of reports
to be considered.
The following reports were selected to be considered at the 13th session: Guyana,
Madagascar, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, Zambia, Guatemala, and Netherlands (initial
reports); Ecuador Barbados, Senegal, Japan, New Zealand and Colombia (second reports
with Ecuador's being considered with third periodic report); Norway and Ecuador (third
reports with Ecuador's being considered with second periodic report). These reports were
chosen on criteria
of
order of receipt, geographical representation at a given session and
interest expressed by governments. A reserve list was also drawn up, in case
of
non
presentation by one
of
the governments selected, from Stateswith pending reports in order
of receipt.
II COUNCIL OF EUROPE*
On 7 October 1993 Romania has joined the Council of Europe and has signed the
European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms and the additional
Protocol numbers 2, 3, 5 and 8.
On 9 October 1993 the member States of the Council of Europe held its first summit
conference in Vienna, where three main issues were on the agenda. At first the reform
of the control mechanism of the European Conventionon Human Rights was discussed.
Since the entry into force of the Convention in 1953 the number of contracting States has
almost tripled. As a result of this the number of cases pending before the European
Commission and the European Court of Human Rights has grown enormously. In order
to maintain in the future the effective international protection of human rights it was felt
that a reform of the supervisory mechanism had become necessary. The purpose of this
