valuable contributions this study does make to the debate on universal
human rights - for which Kiihnhardt deserves considerable credit. Most
importantly, he meticulously describes the historical development of
normative systems other than human rights governing the relation of
individuals and the State. And he convincingly points out the essential
differences of these systems and human rightsas defined by himself. Also,
he convinces in stressing the importance of incorporating the historical
dimension into the analysis of human rights. This serves to illustrate that
human rights, as Kiihnhardt notes, are no bloodless abstraction and
ultimately can never be the subject of an analysis that is in itself free of
values. Unfortunately, this did not prevent Kiihnhardt from claiming
universal human rights for religious people. To some people such spiritual
origin is a acute example of what can't be - in the author's own
words-
"deduced from the human person".
