II NEW BOOKS
Business and human rights: dilemmas and solutions / ed. by Rory Sullivan. –
Sheffield: Greenleaf Publishing, 2003. – 335 p.
ISBN: 1874719705
It has increasingly been argued that companies have responsibilities for the
protection and promotion of human rights. These arguments are, at least to
some extent, accepted by companies. Yet, despite the increasing use of
human rights language in public policy discourses, the expectations of
companies remain unclear. This book provides an analysis of the relations-
hip between companies and human rights in the context of globalisation.
The first part maps the reasons (financial, ethical, regulatory) why human
rights have become a business issue. The second part of the book looks at
the practical experiences of companies in responding to specific human
rights issues in the context of their own operations, in their supply chains
and in specific countries.
Constructing human rights in the age of globalization / ed. by Monshipouri,
Mahmood ... [et al.]. – London: M.E. Sharpe, 2003. – xxxiii, 353 p. –
(International relations in a constructed world)
ISBN: 0-7656-1137-6

constructed, and they draw their power from the specific cultural and
political contexts in which they are constructed. Far from bringing about a
harmonious cosmopolitan order, they have stimulated conflict and opposi-
tion. In the context of globalisation, as the idea of human rights has become
universal, its meaning has become one more terrain of struggle among
groups with their own interests and goals. The contributions in the first part
of this book look at political and cultural struggles to control the human
rights regime, with respect to property, the State, the environment, and
women. Part two examines the dynamics and counter dynamics of
transnational networks in their interactions with local actors in Iran, China,
and Hong Kong. The last part looks at the prospects for a fruitful human
rights dialogue.

The contributors to this book draw upon the insights of history, political
