The Import Duties (European Free Trade Association) Order, 1960

The Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury, by virtue of the powers conferred on them by sections one, two and thirteen of the Import Duties Act, 1958(a), and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, on the recommendation of the Board of Trade hereby make the following Order:—

1. This Order applies to goods grown, produced or manufactured in, and consigned to the United Kingdom from a place in, the Convention area, other than goods of any description specified in the First Schedule to this Order which do not fall within the Second Schedule thereto.

2. Where goods to which this Order applies are imported into the United Kingdom and (apart from this Order) import duty would be charged on that importation under the Import Duties (General) Order, 1958(b), then—

(a) in the case of goods of any description specified in the first column of the Second Schedule to this Order—

(i) if a rate of duty is shown in relation to the goods in the second column of the said Second Schedule, the amount of duty chargeable as aforesaid shall be determined as if the said rate were substituted for the relevant rate shown in the second column of the Schedule to the Import Duties (General) Order, 1958,

(ii) if no rate of duty is shown in relation to the goods in the second column of the said Second Schedule, no import duty shall be charged;

(b) in the case of goods of any description not so specified, the amount of duty chargeable as aforesaid shall be determined as if the relevant rate shown in the second column of the Schedule to the Import Duties (General) Order, 1958, were less by one-fifth.

3.—(1) This Order may be cited as the Import Duties (European Free Trade Association) Order, 1960.

(2) References in the Schedules to this Order to Chapters, headings or sub-headings are references to Chapters, headings or sub-headings of the Customs Tariff, 1959.

(3) The Interpretation Act, 1889(c), shall apply for the interpretation of this Order as it applies for the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.

(4) This Order shall come into operation on the first day of July, nineteen hundred and sixty.
