Purpose
(1) To discuss the theme and evolve a
policy document on Profession in
India: Vision for 2010.
(2) To have deliberations on Strategic
Planning and Implementation, Uni-
versal Availability of Information,
Internet and its Future, Digital
Library/Resources Management,
Knowledge Management in Digital
Environment, National LIS Policy,
LIS Education and Research in
Changing Context, Professional
Association and Professional Ethics.
(3) To conduct Special Interest Group
Meetings on:
.SIG Computer Application:
Access Mechanism and Usage
of e-Resources;
.SIG Lib. and Inf.Sc.Edu.: The
way LIS Courses are offered;
.SIG Humanities Information:
Manuscript as a Source of
Information for Contemporary
History;
.SIG Social Science Informa-
tion.: Social Science Informa-
tion in IT Environment;
.SIG Informatics: Cybernetics;
and
.SIG Industrial Information:
Industrial Information the
Source of Development.
(4) To organize Panel Discussion on
Digital Preservation Strategy.
(5) To conduct the general body meet-
ing of IASLIC.
(6) To conduct the counting of votes
for the post of President of IASLIC.
Design/methodology/approach
The methodology adopted for the
Conference was based on participatory
decision making using a highly defined
structured approach. Initially, papers
were invited from the professionals
from India and, nearly 100 papers were
received which were classified into
various technical sessions for the
presentation. Professor C.R.
Karissiddappa was the Conference
Director who successfully conducted
the technical sessions (Figure 1).
Findings
The following recommendations
were finalized:
.A comprehensive and cohesive
information policy based on the
realities of ICT should be urgently
formulated so as to facilitate an
integrated approach in the planning
of information systems and ser-
vices as well as developing the
necessary infrastructure by ex-
panding provision via intranet,
extranet and internet for a wider
subscriber set with a different
needs by harnessing the new emer-
ging technologies.
.Efforts should be initiated and
undertaken in the development of
open source resources by open
access publishing and self archiv-
ing, and in the evaluation and
adoption of open access models in
the context of IPR implications,
which could support access to
metadata and the associated scho-
larly digital resources.
.Libraries and Information Profes-
sionals use criteria such as credibil-
ity accuracy, comprehensiveness/
coverage, objectivity, currency,
reasonableness, performance in
the evaluation of Internet resources
and associated search engines as
well as adopt a certain degree of
content regulation/organization of
information so as to provide max-
imum customer satisfaction.
.Libraries and Information centers
digitize their information sources
and adopt appropriate open source
software for organization and dis-
semination of digital resources.
.Knowledge management techni-
ques are applied in Digital Li-
braries so as to make an optimum
utilization of digital resources.
.LIS curriculum must be redesigned
to expand core competencies of
staff by including technology
skills, personal skills, leadership
skills, service skills, etc., so as to
meet the needs of the library
workplace and promote libraries
as work places for the future.
.Library associations such IASLIC,
ILA, IATLIS, etc. formulate a code
of ethics taking into consideration,
the existing realities of digital
environment.
.Necessary efforts should be made
in the design and development of
efficient and effective networking
management systems taking into
considerations issues relating to
cyber crimes, and security of
systems and information contained
in them.
.Due recognition and representation
be provided for librarians ± infor-
mation professionals in the new
knowledge commissions by the
