Review Essays: Critical Engagement
INTRODUCTION
The following book review essays and responses launch a new format for
the Journal of International Political Theory. We have invited two established
f‌igures who have recently published books in the f‌ield of international political
theory to review each other’s works and then reply to those reviews. With this
format, we hope to initiate more of a critical engagement and dialogue than
is the norm with scholarly reviews. By allowing reviewers to ‘speak’ to each
other through this format, we hope to create a conversation around key themes
in the study of international political theory. In the exchange that follows, and the
books upon which it is based, there emerge a number of important themes, such
as the relationship between theory and practice, the ideological foundations of
cosmopolitanism, and contested conceptions of judgement. The fact that these
important and pressing themes can arise in this limited engagement should
encourage readers to explore them more fully in the books themselves. If
recently published authors would like to engage in a similar exchange, please
contact the Journal’s Associate Editor.
