On January 8 2023 thousands
of supporters of the recently
ousted Brazilian President, Jair
Bolsonaro, stormed government
oces, claiming that the election was
corrupt and that the newly-elected Lula
da Silva was not the legitimate President.
This came almost exactly a year after near-
identical scenes in the United States when
supporters of former President Donald
Trump rioted on the Capitol.

Recent events from around the world have challenged democratic
institutions. Is public support for liberal democracy on the wane?
And what can be done to change this? Daniel Devine investigates.
